Iran backs Iraq’s unity, territorial integrity: Afkham
Press TV -(Sat Aug 16, 2014) Iran has welcomed the transition of power in Iraq as a good opportunity for its western neighbor, saying Tehran supports unity and territorial integrity in the Arab country.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s basic position is all-out support for Iraq’s unity, cohesion and territorial integrity,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said on Saturday.
She welcomed the peaceful transition of power in Iraq and said the move is indicative of the existence of deep-seated legal frameworks, progress of democratic process, and stability in the Arab country.
The Iranian official also praised the significant role of senior clergy and political figures and parties in the recent developments in Iraq.
She expressed hope that all Iraqi groups will seize the moment to play their “effective and constructive” role in the political process, help the resolution of problems and speed up establishment of government in the Arab country.
On Thursday, former Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki stepped down to make way for Prime Minister-designate Haider al-Abadi.
In its statement, al-Maliki’s Dawa Party also “called on political blocs to cooperate with the constitutionally-designated prime minister, Mr. Abadi, and accelerate the formation of a government in the defined time period.”
Earlier in the month, Iraq’s new President Fouad Massoum appointed the deputy parliament speaker, Abadi, to form a new government.
Abadi has 30 days to form the next government and present it to parliament for approval.
