Statement by H. E. Mr. Hossein Dehghani
Ambassador and Charge d’Affairs of the Permanent Mission of
the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations
Before the Meeting of Ambassadors of Member Countries of the
Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to the United Nations
23 July 2014 , New York
In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
Ladies and gentlemen,
I wish to thank the Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Permanent Observer Mission of OIC to the United Nations for convening this important meeting at this crucial juncture.
At the the beginning, I take the opportunity to convey condolences and sympathy of the people and the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Palestinian people for the ongoing heart-breaking human tragedy in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Al-Quds Al-sharif.
Once again the Occupied Palestinian Territory, particularly the Gaza Strip, is the scene of brutal Israeli aggression against Palestinians. The Iranian people, like other peace-loving people all around the world, are shocked by the savagery committed by the Occupying Zionist regime against the innocent Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, particularly in the besieged Gaza Strip.
The numbers and facts reflecting Israel’s latest round of savagery in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is truly shocking. Since 7 July, in about two weeks, the Israeli regime has killed at least 700 and injured more than 4000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, many of them women and children and most of them civilians. These figures set another bleak record for this notorious regime. The ruthless killing of innocent children, women and men in Gaza in the holy fasting month of Ramadan by the Zionist regime puts reveals the terrorist nature of this regime, once again. The continuation of the Israeli atrocities against the Palestinians will exacerbate human tragedy and will definitely pose serious threats to peace and security in the region.
To the same extent that the barbaric actions of Israel is unbearable, is the silence and even explicit support of certain countries, who are accomplices in what is happening in Palestine today. Supporting Israel, despite its persistent violation of the principles of International law and international humanitarian law, is deeply alarming. Instead of condemning the aggressor, they put the blame on the Palestinian people for their resistance against aggression. These are the same countries who have equipped Israel with deadly weapons and political and financial support to continue killing of innocent people with extending impunity to this regime.
Despite efforts made by international organizations and other actors, including the United Nations, to de-escalate the situation, lack of political will to address the ongoing tragedy and its roots is evident. During the recent crisis, it was only five days after the Israeli aggression started that the Security Council called for cease-fire on 12 July in a form of press statement. It was too little, too late. The Security Council should have shouldered its duties under the UN Charter and take necessary measures, immediately and effectively, not only to prevent more civilian causalities and bring an immediate halt to the current invasion of Israel to the Occupied Palestine Territory, but also to address the main root causes of this situation which are impunity of the criminals and continuation of illegal occupation. It failed once again.
Since the call for ceasefire was made by the Security Council, the Israeli regime has blatantly widened its offensive in the Gaza Strip, which is an apparent affront to the face of the international community.
The recent attacks of the blood-thirsty Israel to the densely populated and besieged Gaza Strip have deteriorated the already dire humanitarian situation of the 1.8 million Palestinians living under Israel’s inhumane blockade for more than eight years. The very fragile situation in all the Occupied Palestinian Territory, particularly in the Gaza Strip, demands urgent attention and cooperation of the OIC and other international organizations to end the aggression and to end the inhumane blockade of the Gaza Strip. It is high time for OIC and Islamic countries to act and to show their solidarity with the Palestinian people in every possible way.
In line with the Islamic precious values of brotherhood among Muslims, unity of the Islamic Ummah and supporting the oppressed, the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready and appeals to all Members of the OIC and the OIC institutions, to extend their moral and humanitarian support to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip during this difficult time.
At the end, Mr. Chairman, like always I would like to reiterate that the Islamic Republic of Iran is and will remain by its Palestinian brothers and sisters in pursuit of their aspirations for their land, freedom, justice and dignity.
