Iraq speaker election blow to terrorists: Iran official
Press TV -(Wed Jul 16, 2014) An Iranian diplomat says the election of a new Iraqi parliament speaker has dealt a severe blow to terrorists in the Arab country.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Wednesday congratulated Iraq on the election of Salim al-Jabouri as the country’s new parliament speaker.
He said that the election of the Iraqi speaker is an important step towards the reinforcement of the political trend in the Arab country.
“Iraqi leaders have, through this measure, taken a step toward the further strengthening of national trust and given a firm response to terrorists,” he said.
The Iranian official said that Iraqi Kurdish, Sunni and Shia leaders will disappoint enemies through national solidarity as well as reliance on independence, territorial integrity and the constitution of the country.
On Tuesday, Jabouri, a well-known moderate Sunni politician, won an absolute majority, 194 of the 273, of votes from Iraqi lawmakers. He was nominated by the country’s main Sunni political coalition.
After the election of the parliament speaker, lawmakers are now trying to pick the next prime minister and president. The members of parliament are tasked with naming a new government.
This comes as the Iraqi forces are pressing ahead with their fight against ISIL Takfiri militants, who have taken control of large swathes of the country and threatened to take the battle to the capital, Baghdad.
