Talks, elections only solution to Syria crisis: Larijani
Press TV -(Wed Apr 9, 2014) Iranian Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani says the only solution to end the prolonged crisis in Syria is through broad-based negotiations and elections.
“Resolving the issue of Syria is only feasible through political means and dialogue among all Syrian parties, and holding national elections in this country,” Larijani told activists with the international convoy entitled “Pilgrims of Peace” in Tehran on Wednesday.
The Iranian official blamed the US-led invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq for infesting the region with terrorism, which has now found its way into Syria.
Larijani reiterated Tehran’s support for “democratic process and political resolution” of the crisis in Syria. He also stressed his country’s opposition to any foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs and any military intervention in the war-torn nation.
Mother Superior Agnes Mariam de la Croix, a member of the Support Team for Syria Reconciliation, thanked Tehran for its efforts to help find a peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria.
Syria has been plagued by relentless militancy since March 2011. Damascus says the West and its regional allies have been fuelling violence in Syria by providing militants with money and weapons.
Earlier in the month, the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the total deaths resulting from the ongoing crisis in Syria amounted to 150,344 people.
The London-based pro-opposition group said there were 51,212 civilians, including 7,985 children, among the dead.
