Iran hails UN resolution against hostage-taking by terrorists

Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham

Press TV -(Tue Jan 28, 2014) Iran has welcomed a resolution by the United Nations Security Council for greater cooperation against kidnapping and hostage-taking by terrorist groups.

The Security Council’s move to pass this resolution will be an effective step to counter terrorism, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham told reporters at her weekly press briefing on Tuesday.
“The approval of this resolution will prepare the ground for taking a serious step against this phenomenon [in cooperation] with regional and world countries, and making efforts to converge in this regard,” Afkham said, adding that a collective measure by all countries is needed to fight terrorism.
“If the world fails to deal with terrorism properly and takes a discriminatory approach, all attempts will fail and more countries will definitely fall victim to violence,” the Iranian spokesperson stated.
She emphasized that Iran is a victim of terrorism itself and called on the international community and media to pay more attention to the issue of terrorism.
On Monday, the UN Security Council strongly condemned incidents of kidnapping and hostage-taking by terrorists for any purpose and called for international cooperation to tackle this scourge.
In its first-ever resolution devoted specifically to kidnapping for ransom by terrorists, the 15-member body called on all member states to prevent terrorists from benefitting directly or indirectly from ransom payments or from political concessions.
