Honesty, impartiality key to world peace: Iran official
Press TV -(Tue Jan 28, 2014) A senior Iranian official has described honesty and non-discrimination as the prerequisites for international cooperation on the promotion of peace, justice and stability.
Secretary of Iran Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani made the comments in a Tuesday meeting with former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who is visiting Iran as the head of a group of former global leaders known as the Elders.
Shamkhani lauded the Elders’ efforts to encourage understanding, dialogue for peace, justice and human rights.
Based on its principled policies, Islamic Republic seeks cooperation and participation at regional and international levels, and welcomes any move meant to achieve such a goal, he added.
Turning to the ongoing crisis in Syria and its regional and international impacts, Shamkhani stressed the need for political solutions based on the Syrian nation’s will.
The senior Iranian official further underlined Tehran’s unwavering stance on the need for a Syrian-Syrian solution, and that Syria’s future must be determined by free and fair elections.
Iran strongly urges the cessation of the massacre of innocent people by terrorist groups in Syria and an end to the suffering and deplorable difficulties of the Syrian people.
Annan, for his part, praised Iran’s efforts and cooperation for the reduction of regional and international crises, noting that the Islamic Republic plays a unique role in the establishment of regional peace and stability, and should be involved in any initiative meant to ensure security.
The former UN chief also stressed the need for cooperation among powerful and influential regional countries to narrow divisions and focus more on the roots of instability and violence.
