On behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement
In the hand-over Ceremony of the Chairmanship of the G77 and China
To the Plurinational State of Bolivia from Fiji
Wednesday, 08 January 2013
In the Name of God The Compassionate, the Merciful
Your Excellency Mr. Eva Morales Ayma, President of the Plurinational State of Bolivia,
Your Excellency Mr. Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Fiji,
Your Excellency Mr. John Ashe, President of the UN General Assembly,
Your Excellency Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations,
Distinguished Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
On behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate H.E. Mr. Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Fiji, H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson, the Permanent Representative of Fiji, and his colleagues for ably and professionally steering the activities of the Group of 77 and China throughout the year 2013.
Coming out of the ashes of the Rio+20 process in 2012, the intensiveness of the work of the United Nations system in 2013 and beyond has been acknowledged by all across the globe.
In this sense, since almost all NAM members are members of the Group 77 and China, I also need to express, on behalf of NAM Member States, our heartfelt gratitude for the excellent way Fiji conducted our activities within the Group and during the difficult negotiations with our partners.
Indeed, the Group of 77 and China has a significant role in helping the world weather through the turbulent economic situations that we have encountered and still continue to face. The Movement believes that the Group should still continue to be the focal point and key player in the years ahead, particularly in designing the SDGs and the Post-2015 development agenda.
As it is the case, I would also like to congratulate the Plurinational State of Bolivia for assuming the Chairmanship of the G77 and China for 2014. I have no doubt that Bolivia will ably conduct the proceedings of the Group in this year in an excellent manner to the best interest of the Group.
While conveying our best wishes to the Delegation of the Plurinational State of Bolivia in their efforts towards fulfilling its task, I should assure them of the availability of the NAM to facilitate Bolivia’s job and uphold the understanding and traditional cooperation between the two wherever there might be a need during the year.
The presence of H. E. Mr Eva Morales Ayma, President of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, among us today manifests the importance attached by the Government of Bolivia to this august body, which we welcome and commend.
Finally, in pursuing our common interest, the Plurinational State of Bolivia can always count on the support of the Non-Aligned Movement during its year-long tenure.
I thank you, Mr. Chairman.
