Explanation of Vote by the Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran
in the General Assembly (Fifth Committee matters)
on the question of Special Political Missions
(Special Advisor on Responsibility to Protect- Agenda item 134)
New York – 27 December 2013
In the Name of God, the Compassionate the Merciful
My delegation has asked for the floor to explain its vote to section VI of the resolution 2 under this agenda item.
Iran has always supported the activities of the United Nations in all areas related to its scope of work as long as they abide by the rules and regulations of the organization and remain within the international law and the realm of the United Nations.
Although Iran supports the functions of the Special Adviser of the Secretary General on the Prevention of Genocide, in the view of my delegation, the issue of the “Responsibility to Protect”, including its definition, is still under the consideration of the General Assembly. It is therefore, not acceptable for my delegation that the limited financial resources of the Organization be allocated to funding posts for which there is no mandated definition.
It was based on this reason that my delegation voted against section VI of the resolution.
I thank you, Mr. President
