Iran has never sought access to WMD: Rouhani

President Hassan Rohani

Press TV -(Mon Dec 16, 2013) Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani says the country has never sought Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and believes possession of such arms would not serve its national interests, whatsoever.

“Our country has never been, and is not after WMD,” said the president in an address in Tehran on Monday honoring leading local researchers.
“In terms of religious beliefs, this nation is not seeking WMD and does not consider them as part of its national interests and even its defence doctrine,” the president emphasized.
“This principle serves as our guideline in conducting research,” he added.
President Rouhani’s remarks come as the United States and its major allies continue to accuse the Islamic Republic of pursuing nuclear weapons under the guise of a nuclear energy program.
During his Monday asddress, President Rouhani further underlined the significance of conducting useful research, stressing that scholarly research by Iranian students and academicians must be carried out based on the country’s needs and available resources, or the effort would be in vain.
The president also urged local researchers to pay due regard to environmental problems, including water shortage.
