Explanation of vote after the vote
by the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran
on relevant resolutions under agenda items 49:
Effect of Atomic Radiation
New York, 14 November 2013
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
The Islamic Republic of Iran attaches great importance to the role of the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) in promoting wider knowledge and understanding of the level, effects and risk of atomic radiation on human being and environment. To fulfill its responsibility efficiently, the Committee should be able to benefit from the contribution and knowledge of all interested countries in all possible ways, including through participation in the work of the Committee.
My delegation welcomes the adoption by consensus of the draft resolution A/68/L.7/Rev.1, inter alia, the paragraph OP16 of the draft resolution regarding the membership in the Scientific Committee and considers it as positive step towards the membership of the interested Member States in the Scientific Committee.
In this regard, I would like to thank all those delegations that supported our proposed amendment regarding the membership in UNSCEAR. My gratitude also goes to the distinguished delegation of Australia, in particular, Mrs. Anastasia Carayanides and her colleague, Ms. Peta McDougall, for their dedicated efforts in the course of informal negotiation which lead us to a consensus resolution.
