Statement by H.E. Ambassador Mohammad Khazaee
Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations
Before Taking Action on Draft Resolutions on Nuclear Weapons
At the 68th Session of the First Committee
New York, 4 November 2013
In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
Nuclear weapons are the greatest threat to our life, to the life of our children, to the present and future generations, to the security of our planet, and to the whole humanity.
Total elimination of these inhumane weapons is the only absolute grantee against their threat or use.
Before they consume us all together, we must consume them all together.
This is not an option, but a must.
This is both our right and responsibility.
We must do whatever we can to fulfill this long overdue legal obligation.
The first ever UNGA high-level meeting on nuclear disarmament held in September 2013 was indeed a step in the right direction.
Extensive participation of the heads of State and government and other dignitaries in the HLM and their strong support for nuclear disarmament indicated that it continues to remain the highest priority.
We need to invest further political will to achieve a nuclear-weapon-free world at the earliest date.
We should take advantage of the momentum created by the HLM to take forward multilateral negotiations on nuclear disarmament.
The 3-point action-oriented proposal, presented by President Roohani on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement, gained wide support both at the HLM and here in the First Committee.
We are looking forward to the strong support of all Member States for a NAM draft resolution containing these proposals.
This draft resolution is in full support of international efforts within the NPT Review Conferences and has the potential to overcome the current situation in the Conference on Disarmament.
I thank you Mr. Chairman.
