Iran warns of dangerous plot to sow sectarian discord in Islamic world
Press TV -(Sun Aug 18, 2013) Iran Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi has warned against a “very dangerous” plot to sow sectarian discord across the Muslim world, saying the Israeli regime is liable for such plots.
“We hold the Zionist regime [of Israel] accountable for the heavy plot to cause sectarian conflict among Islamic sects,” Araqchi told ISNA on Sunday.
“Fueling the flames of sectarian conflicts and creating rift among Shia and Sunni [Muslims] and [between] different tribes and groups, constitutes a very dangerous plot [which targets] the entire Muslim world. Certain groups have unfortunately been deceived and dragged into this plot,” he added.
The Iranian spokesperson emphasized that only the Israeli regime would benefit from polarization of Muslim states and the ongoing killing and blasts in these countries.
He called on leaders of Muslim countries, particularly Iraq, to remain vigilant and prevent the spread of division among Islamic sects.
“Maintenance of unity, national solidarity, and territorial integrity is Iraq’s most important need which will be met only through cooperation among all groups,” Araqchi stated.
He noted that foreign powers are not interested in Iraq’s solidarity, and are supplying aid to terrorist groups.
More than 4,000 Iraqis have been killed in the violence since the beginning of 2013.
The United Nations said on August 1 that a total of 1,057 Iraqis were killed and another 2,326 were wounded in acts of terrorism and violence in the month of July, making it the country’s deadliest month since 2008.
