before the high level roundtable on

 “Elimination and Prevention of all Forms of Violence against Women and Girls”

 In the Name of God

 

Mr. Chairman,  

The Islamic Republic of Iran, inspired by the divine teachings and based on Islamic values, devotes a special approach towards human beings, in particular women, and it does not tolerate any form of oppression or misbehavior towards women and girls.
Through a comprehensive approach towards the status of women in the family and the society, Iran has adopted preventive measures with regards to violence against women, through the implementation of many large scale developing and cultural programs and legislations with the aim of preserving the status of family and promoting the security of individuals with special attention towards women.
The most important experiences and achievements of the Islamic Republic of Iran preventing and overcoming violence against women and girls are as follows:

  1.  Legal measures, including drafting a bill on women’s security in 81 articles in 2011-2012
  2. Education-cultural measures including creating situations for equal opportunities and eliminating gender discrimination and increasing educational coverage and reducing barriers in the way of underprivileged students. Holding public conferences and educational workshops by women members of small communities to provide awareness and prevention of violence.
  3. Research measures including basic research and implementation of justice-oriented programs to prevent social disorder and fighting against corruption and injustice against women.
  4. Health measures and plans including organizing operational teams and mobile units (according to the needs of damaged communities, particularly women and children) by the country’s Red Crescent.
  5. Judiciary measures including disciplinary measures such as establishment of counseling centers at the level of police stations and other special centers with the aim of improving women’ safety and security and addressing their problems.
  6. Establishment of the office of support for women and children at the Judiciary of every province.
  7. Establishment of the support fund for victims especially women victim of violence against women.
  8. Economical measures including taking and strengthening family economic support policies with the focus on women and children as vulnerable members of the society (providing social insurance to single mothers and providing entrepreneurial and self-employment facilities for women.)
  9. i.       Supportive measures including the establishment of social emergency programs and assistance centers to address individual and family crises (social emergency), operation of the  hotline 123 for social emergency and establishment of social service centers with the aim of empowering women in their informal  occupations and to control and reduce social vulnerability.
  10. Measures in the field of special issues including the establishment of the national committee on humanitarian rights for offering supportive and preventing measures during special situations such as natural disaster.

    Finally, based on the valuable experience of the Islamic Republic of Iran and with respect to the lesson learned by myself in leading the programs on the prevention and elimination of violence against women, highly recommend that the following be included in the outcome of this session:

1-     Strengthening the family institution as the foundation of the society and highlighting its role in the prevention of violence against women and girls.               

2-     Strengthening moral and spiritual values and respect for human dignity and cultural diversity.
