Ahmadinejad urges action to halt Israel’s settlement construction
Press TV - ( Feb 7, 2013) Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for the employment of all political and legal tools to halt Israel’s settlement activities.
Ahmadinejad underlined the need to stop Israel’s settlement construction and the destruction and seizure of Palestinian lands by the Israeli regime during a meeting on Israel’s settlement policy at a summit of the leaders of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Wednesday.
He said that since the occupation of Palestine, Israel has been continuing to destroy the Palestinians’ houses and expand settlements with the aim of changing the demographic composition and ruining the Palestinian social milieu.
The Iranian president said that Israel seeks to use the settlement activities as a bargaining chip in political negotiations with Palestinian leaders.
“One of the main reasons behind the Zionists’ continued settlement construction is to use this tool as a lever of pressure on the Palestinian government and representatives for extortion or as a stick in political talks,” Ahmadinejad said.
He added that the Israeli regime was created on the foundations of oppression, aggression and occupation, and added that the regime, which is inherently belligerent, occupying and supported by the global arrogance, was not committed to human rights and obligations.
The Israeli regime increased its settlement activities after an upgrade in the Palestinian status at the United Nations General Assembly on November 29, 2012. The 193-member General Assembly voted 138-9 with 41 abstentions to upgrade Palestine’s status to non-member observer state.
The Israeli settlements are considered illegal by much of the international community. However, defiant Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the settlement construction is part of Tel Aviv’s policy and will not stop.
