Explanation of vote by the Delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran in

the 67th Session of the General Assembly

(issues related to the Fifth Committee)

Special Political Missions (Responsibility to Protect)

24 December 2012

My delegation has asked for the floor to explain its vote under this agenda item.

My delegation has always supported the activities of the United Nations in all areas related to its scope of work as long as they abide by the rules and regulations of the Organization and remain within the international law and the realm of the United Nations.

Although Iran supports the functions of the Special Adviser of the Secretary General on the Prevention of Genocide, in the view of my delegation, the issue of the “Responsibility to Protect”, including its definition, is still under the consideration of the General Assembly. It is therefore, not acceptable for my delegation that the limited financial resources of the Organization be allocated to funding posts for which there is no mandated definition.

It is based on this reason that my delegation will vote against this section of the draft resolution and urges other member states to do so.
