Explanation of Vote of the Delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran
On Draft Resolutions:
“Towards a nuclear-weapon-free world: accelerating the implementation of nuclear disarmament commitments” and
“Decreasing the operational readiness of nuclear weapons systems”
At the 67th Session of the First Committee
New York, 5 November 2012
In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
My delegation joined the consensus in the adoption of draft resolutions entitled: “Towards a nuclear-weapon-free world: accelerating the implementation of nuclear disarmament commitments” and “Decreasing the operational readiness of nuclear weapons systems”, contained respectively in documents: A/C.1/67/L.13 and A/C.1/67/L.28.
Nevertheless, we would like to put on record that these draft resolutions are acceptable for us inasmuch as their content is in line with the Final Document of the 2010 NPT Review Conference.
Moreover, in regard to references made to the meetings of Nuclear-Weapon States, as well as the implementation of certain bilateral agreements between two Nuclear-Weapon States, we would like to stress that reduction in deployment and in operational status cannot substitute for irreversible cuts in, and the total elimination of, nuclear weapons.
At the same time, we call upon the parties to that agreement, in fulfillment of their nuclear disarmament obligations, to apply the principles of transparency, irreversibility and verifiability to such cuts and to further reduce their nuclear arsenals, both warheads and delivery systems.
I thank you Mr. Chairman.
