Statement by Ambassador Eshagh Al Habib
Deputy Permanent Reprsentative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations
at the UN-Women Executive Board Session on its first Strategic Plan
(New York, 27 July 2011)
In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
At the outset I would like to thank Madam Bachelet the Executive Director for her opening statement to the Board and the presentation of the Strategic Plan. My delegation believes that UN-Women has shown clear indication that it strives to achieve its conviction to move in the right direction under leadership of Madam Bachelet and owing to the hard work of the Executive Board and the entity’s staff during the past year.
One of the most important achievements of UN-Women is the introduction of the Strategic Plan for the entity. The procedure for the codification of the strategic plan by the Executive Board of UN-Women, aims to assist all member states as well as the UN System entities to progress more effectively and efficiently towards the advancement of women around the world.
My delegation believes that one of the main characteristic of the strategy should be the realities on the ground about women’s daily life around the world parallel to its aim of achieving all its ideals and objectives in the future. The achievement of the goals of UN-Women and the overcoming of the long-term challenges depends on due consideration of the important role of the national priorities as well as the cultural and religious values and diversities.
My delegation believes that development and strengthening women’s situation in all aspects of life are important pathways to their empowerment and access to their rights in the society. Additionally, considering the significant role of women in families, due considerations to strengthening this role is also crucial for the stability and integrity of societies. Family is the main block of the society, therefore adoption of policies for its enhancement and promotion is crucial and should be properly taken into consideration. My delegation wishes to emphasize that such important issue must be properly reflected in the Strategic Plan.
The elements of the Strategic Framework for the biennium 2012-2013 is being drafted by the Committee on Programming and Coordination as we speak, my delegation hopes that UN-Women would carefully consider these elements when the entity applies the Strategic Plan so that future reports of UN-Women to the GA receives favorable reaction from the Member States who will judge the performance of the entity on the way the entity proves the arriving at the accomplishments approved by the CPC against the indicators of achievements thereto.
The advancement of the status of the Iranian Women in the society under the national strategic plan in politics, economic, social and cultural development, has been significant in recent years. Based on our national programs regarding development of women’s situation and strengthening the family entity, with observing our international commitments, the Islamic Republic of Iran has provided a favorable situation and platform for women’s promotion and achieved remarkable results.
The improvements of women’s status in the cultural, social, economic and political life of Iran are part of the key elements of all national policies and legislations and decision makings. In recent decade, the indexes related to women have had a considerable growth in the areas of development, education and research, science and technology, justice, security, and health. Moreover, women have participated in all decision planning, policy making and implementation.
